Unloading and carrying to the shore

Imagine your week-end outing : you don’t need to do hundreds of kilometers to sail, the plan is to explore a quiet and picturesque canal close to your home : WINDYAK use is not restricted to only sea and large lakes. However, when arrived on site with boat carried on car roof, it is not easy to find a suited sloping place to go to water in trimaran configuration. In addition, wind is at the moment evanescent. No worry ! WINDYAK will start folded, just like a kayak !

  • First, bring down each float (untie for each of them the strap maintaining it in one of the deck cockpits)

Remark : for small models, the beam may be transported already equipped, and in that case this operation does not exist.

  • Then take down rig, beam and paddles tied up laterally to the central hull

Déchargement du gréement / Unloading the rig

  • You can now get down the hull including rudder blade, tiller and partner. The whole can be carried by two people, but you can even ease this step by first unloading these parts.

Note: When distance from car to water is greater than a few dozen of meters, a small dismountable truck (that could be then storable on board) will be a plus to reach the shore, and carry at once the whole boat.

Mounting ashore & boarding

WINDYAK mounting to folded configuration consists of only 4 following operations.

  • Rudder mounting : slip the rudder head onto its axle, and attach steering wires and blade maneuvering ropes with corresponding fast hanks.

  • Secure rig on starboard side, mast foot ahead, with dedicated straps.

  • Floats mounting on beam (this step does not exist if the whole system has been transported assembled):

Dismantle on 45°angulated axle the system locking the float (currently a collar clamp, to be replaced soon by a tool-useless device).

Montage des flotteurs / Mounting the floats -1-

Slip the cylinder shaped sheath firmly attached to float deck onto the 45° angulated axle in order to have the float unfolded below the beam.

Reassemble the float locking device on 45° angulated axle.

Tie to each float the two ropes commanding folding and unfolding.

  • Beam mounting on boat :

The floats being aligned in folded position, tighten the float maneuvering ropes.

Now just slip the cylinder shaped sheath fasten at beam central part, onto vertical axle located on central hull.

Once the beam resting on deck, secure it with dedicated straps.

  • Boarding : use the basic known technique leaning on your paddle.

Unfolding on water

Now you have left, paddling. The rudder, maneuvered by a foot bar, allows a fine and effortless steering.

Half an hour later, a breeze has risen and now ripples the water : It is time to continue sailing, using the sail ! Unfolding may be easily performed on water when weather is fine (2-3 Beaufort scale number).

  • Untie the two straps securing the beam on the deck

Déploiement du bras / Unfolding the beam -1-

Note: If you want to increase stability during the unfolding of the beam, you can push down the center board located in the fore cockpit.

Now, only you, the aft crew member, are going to operate (this permits to easily take beginners onboard WINDYAK).

  • Lift the beam and move it above your head. The beam then leans on the central volume to continue its rotation until it lodges itself into the two lateral cradles.

Déploiement du bras / Unfolding the beam -2-Déploiement du bras / Unfolding the beam -3-

The boat is now much more stable thanks to the inertia of the beam+floats assembly, which, although not yet fastened to the hull, now plays the role of a balancing pole (as for a tightrope walker)

  • You can now be kneeling at fore of your aft cockpit to fix the beam : On each side, put the strap over the beam and hook the hank with the shackle fastened to the hull. Then tighten the strap using the strap strainer. Beam will progressively wedge itself as tightening goes along in the wedge-shaped cradles, all motions being blocked.

Déploiement du bras / Unfolding the beam -4-Déploiement du bras / Unfolding the beam -5-Déploiement du bras / Unfolding the beam -6-

The boat is now very stable, as soon as beam leans on water when heeling.

  • To unfold each float within a few seconds, just unfasten the folding rope from its clamp cleat on the beam. Float will perform around the 45° angulated axle an about 160° rotary movement under the action of its weight. Pull the unfolding rope to end the motion and block it in corresponding snatch cleat.

From now, floats in deployed configuration prevent the craft from rolling. You can then stand up in the cockpit to erect the rig. With some experience, you may perform alone this operation.

  • Untie the small mast-partner stowed on aft deck on starboard side and fit it into the hole located on the fore roof.

Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -1-Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -2-

  • Untie the rig and move it back to be able to lift the mast foot over the deployed beam ; then bring the mast to the fore . Now slip the mast foot onto the jointed sailboard type mast step.

Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -3-Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -4-Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -5-

  • Hook the halyard hank on the strap ring fixed to the mast.

Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -6-

  • Right the mast and put the halyard in the groove of the block located at small mast top.

Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -7-Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -7bis-

  • Haul in the halyard to finish righting the rig, it will wedge stopped against the small mast and between ‘jaws’ fastened at top of this small mast, preventing any motion.

Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -8-Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -9-

The last step now consists in unfurling the sail:

  • haul down manually the sail furling sleeve after having set free its halyard.

Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -10-

  • Let go off the second rope maintaining the battens flattened against the mast to have the sail unfolding like a fan

Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -11-Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -12-

  • Stretch again the 3rd rope tied to the tack to tighten the luff. Circle the mast with strap fastened at tack to get a kind of “gooseneck” ( velcro is welcome!)

Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -13-Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -14-Déploiement du gréement / Unfolding the rig -15-

  • You now only have to hook the mainsheet hoist to the sail to get a propulsive 10m² area.

Mise en place du palan d’écoute / Mounting the main sheet hoist

  • Don’t forget to fasten the tiller, previously stowed on aft deck port side, to the rudder head: You now have at disposal all usual functions of a sailing boat!

Mise en place la de barre / Mounting the tiller

  • Finally, you can secure paddles on fore deck using dedicated straps. They will not hamper you but will still be available to leave a windless area or help maneuvering…

It is nearly faster to perform all these operations rather than describing them !

And to fold, when wind has fallen…

Just perform them in reverse order !
